This is a convenient urban surf spot that is right on the edge of North Shore city in the Auckland region. It tends to be a bit sloppy and isn't all that consistent, but when it works it can give decent sized waves that are suitable for everybody.
The beach is pretty small although as it's on the edge of the city it is easy to access and parking is right next to it. It is also crowded most of the time but it still manages to maintain a decent atmosphere.
The swell here starts working at about 1 m and will hold up to 3 m or so, and on both the wind and the swell need to be coming from the east or the north-east for it to work properly. Best on a rising tide at the mid or high tide position, it is a beach break, both right and left, and even when big the waves are pretty powerless and nothing really out of the ordinary. Length can be a bit disappointing here as it never gets to be any more than 50 m.
North Shore City is one of the most densely populated places in New Zealand and as a result it has a busy and vibrant culture. There are plenty of places to stay, and a good choice when it comes to eating, drinking, or nightlife.
About the only hazard here as some of the locals who will happily drop in on you. Other than that just relax and enjoy it.
